Do you take pride in your designer rugs, leather couches and scatter cushions that adorn your home? Your pets don’t, and they don’t care about your insurance excess either, when they decide to pee on your prized Persian rug or use your chic chaise lounge as a scratching post!
We’ve compiled a few ‘pet hacks’ to protect your beloved belongings from your precious pets – beware, some of them are a bit quirky but give them a chance because they really work!
Pet Hack #1- Use a dryer sheet to get rid of static electricity in your pup’s coat during thunderstorms
If your pooch is petrified of thunderstorms, it’s likely that they’re more frightened by the static build up in their fur versus the loud bangs and flashes of light. Use a dryer sheet to remove static from their coat.
Pet Hack #2- Guard against a guzzle guts – if your dog eats too fast, put a ball in his/her bowl to slow them down.
Putting a ball your dog’s food bowl should slow down them down and save the walls, carpets and floors!
Pet Hack #3- Baking soda and vinegar get smells and stains out of carpets.
If your precious pet has left their mark on your prized Persian, use baking soda and vinegar to soak up the mess and get the smell out. Soak up the excess urine first and then sprinkle with baking soda and spritz with vinegar. Dab dry with a towel. Sprinkle some more baking soda mixed with baby powder on the spot and let it dry, vacuum it up later for a deodorised, fresh scent.
Pet Hack #4- Use a wet hand to remove pet hair.
If feline fur is not an integral part of your home decor, use a damp hand or cloth to pick up pet hair. Wet your palm and run along the furniture or use a damp rubber glove, rinsing the hair off frequently.
Pet Hack #5- Freeze toys and treats in chicken broth.
Keep your dog occupied and cool during the warmer months by make a homemade ‘ice lick’. It will keep them cool and distracted, which means they are less likely to dig up your gerberas trying to find a cool place to lay down.
Pet Hack #6– Create your own scratching posts (for cats and dogs).
Stop your cat from clawing the furniture or your dog from digging a hole in your prized Persian rug by making your own scratching posts. Wrap sisal rope around a piece of wood (cat) or glue heavy duty sandpaper to a piece of ply board (dog).
Pet Hack #7- Squeegee pet hair off your carpets.
Does your little fur ball shed more than their body weight – daily? Take a squeegee to your carpets and remove stubborn pet hair.
Pet Hack #8- Melt cheese inside a Kong.
Does your pup have surplus energy that they use to tear up the cushions, chew on your favourite shoes or dig holes in your luscious lawn? Keep her entertained by melting a few cubes of cheese inside the Kong (a few seconds in the microwave should do the trick). It will keep her busy for hours!
