The cheapest and most expensive countries to hire a car

Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, having your own car to get around in can make a trip so much easier when you’re abroad.

However, the price of doing so can vary quite drastically depending on where it is that you’re travelling to and can end up eating into your travel budget.

We’ve analysed some of the world’s most visited destinations to see which have the highest and lowest daily rates when it comes to car hire.

For each city, we took the average cost of a ‘standard’ car (5 adults, 3 bags), with the average cost calculated based on listings from the last two weeks (as of September 16th 2021).

The cheapest cities to hire a car

    Madrid, Spain

    US$14 £10/€12

    Average daily rental price

The cheapest destination for car hire was the Spanish capital of Madrid, where the average daily rate was just US$14. Madrid is known for its beautiful boulevards and parks like the Buen Retiro as well as its numerous art galleries, all of which can be explored either on foot or by using the extensive Metro system. However, if you want to get out and explore some of the outlying neighbourhoods of the city, it’s good to know that car hire won’t set you back too much.

  • 2

    Lima, Peru

    US$25 £18/€21

    Average daily rental price

In second place was Lima, Peru, where a day’s car hire will cost an average of US$25. Lima sits on the Pacific coast and is one of the largest cities in South America with lots to see and do, including various museums and the preserved colonial centre. It’s also a major stop on the Pan-American Highway if you want to hire a car and use Lima as a starting point for a South American road trip.

    Cancún, Mexico

    US$26 £19/€22

    Average daily rental price

Another Spanish speaking country completes the top three cheapest destinations for car hire, with Cancún having an average price of US$26 per day. Cancún is a great destination in itself, but if you’re looking to explore the Yucatán Peninsula, you can get a good deal on your car hire!

The most expensive cities to hire a car

  • 1

    Singapore

    US$115 £83/€97

    Average daily rental price

Not all destinations are so affordable when it comes to hiring a car and the daily rate in Singapore is actually over eight times more expensive than that in Madrid, at US$115. Thankfully though, given that Singapore is a small island, you can probably get around without hiring a car.

  • 2

    Fukuoka, Japan

    US$105 £76/€89

    Average daily rental price

Another pricey destination when it comes to car hire is Fukuoka, in Japan, at an average cost of US$105 per day. The city, located on Kyushu Island, is known for its ancient temples like the Tōchō-ji Temple, with its 10m tall wooden Buddha.

  • 3

    Honolulu, United States

    US$98 £71/€83
