About OVO Energy

After initially launching in the UK in 2009 and quickly becoming the nation’s biggest independent energy, OVO Energy launched on Australian shores in 2019. With a friendly customer service team based in Melbourne, the energy provider prides itself on offering excellent service, access to renewable energy and affordable prices.

In a nutshell, OVO Energy has a big focus on providing economical energy and optional GreenPower for all customers. It offers electricity and solar options for people across South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.

Features of OVO Energy’s energy plans

  • Optional GreenPower add-on. With OVO Energy plans, you have the option of investing in the nation’s renewable energy future by upgrading to an energy plan that uses 100% renewable electricity.
  • Free electricity usage window. Depending on your electricity plan, you may be able to receive a daily period of free electricity (e.g. from 11am to 2pm). If you align your electricity consumption with optimal solar energy production, the plan assists with the efficient utilisation of renewable resources, preventing the wastage of excess solar energy generated during these periods.
  • EV charging window. If you have an electric vehicle, you may be able to choose an electricity plan that offers a cheaper rate during a set period of time (e.g. from midnight to 6am), allowing you to charge your EV and start each day with a fully powered vehicle. All you need is a smart meter and, of course, your electric vehicle.
  • For small businesses. OVO Energy is now supplying business energy to small and medium-sized enterprises. To take advantage of this plan, the business must operate between certain hours and have a smart meter. The plan provides flexibility with post-pay options through Bpay, Direct Debit or credit/debit card.
  • Transaction fees waived. You won’t be charged a transaction fee for simply paying your bill each month. There are also no exit fees if you change energy providers.
  • Bill-smoothing. For some plans, you’ll pay the same amount each month for your energy – even if you’re using more or less than other times of the year. OVO Energy estimates how much energy you’ll use in a year and calculates your monthly debit based on this average. You’ll always know what your bill is and by the end of a 12-month period, you should end up with a zero balance.
  • You’re paid interest if you’re in credit. If there’s a month where you’ve used less energy than was estimated on your bill, OVO Energy will pay you interest on this amount. This interest amount increases the longer you’re a customer with OVO Energy.
  • No penalty for increased energy use. Because your bills are estimated, and an average is calculated on how much energy you’ll use for the year, there are going to be some months where you’ll use more energy than others. When calculating your monthly bill, these are taken into consideration, and you won’t be charged interest if your account falls into debt. Your bills may be adjusted if you’re regularly using too much or too little of your estimated usage.
  • Support when you need it. If you have any questions about your bill or require assistance, OVO Energy can help. A Melbourne-based customer service team is available to answer queries online or through their customer service hotline.

Can I use another payment method other than direct debit?

Some plans with OVO Energy require direct debit as the payment method. This ensures your energy payments are scheduled for the same amount at the same time every month, so you can stay on top of your bills. However, depending on which plan you choose, you may be able to pay via BPay, credit card, bank transfer, online or by cheque.

How long does it take to apply?

You’ll be asked a few questions about where you live as part of the application process.

Can I request a paper bill?

No, OVO Energy is 100% paperless, so all your bills and statements will be sent electronically. This incentive not only helps reduce paper waste and save money, but it also allows OVO Energy to communicate with you more efficiently.

Can my energy bill change throughout the year?

While OVO Energy customers enjoy bill-smoothing, there are cases where your bill could increase or decrease. For example, if OVO Energy determines their estimates weren’t in line with your energy consumption, your direct debit may be adjusted. You’ll always be notified of a change ahead of time. Additionally, on certain plans, your bill will change based on your monthly usage.
