Meet the Meerkats
Meet Aleksandr, Sergei and Oleg.
These meerkats really need no introduction. On your screens since 2012, Aleksandr, Sergei and Oleg are the furry trio that make comparing “Simples!”. The meerkats have scaled buildings, wrestled pythons, escaped the clutches of confused possum catchers and shared the screen with Aussie icons, all in the name of helping you save time and money on insurance and energy.
Aleksandr
A handsome, successful businesskat and Chief Meerkat Officer at Compare the Market.
Aleksandr is proud, debonair and a little eccentric. He is a fashion icon sporting his burgundy smoking jacket and golden cravat. He has graced the cover of multiple magazines including Furbes and was even named Timings Meerkat of the Year.
Aleksandr is moviekat actor, writer and director starring in dozens of Compare the Market ads. Among his many claims to fame he is credited with popularizing the term ‘Simples’, which is now in the Oxford English Dictionary.
Aleksandr has a taste for haute cuisine. He’s partial to Beef Wellingtons, as well as Beef Brogues and Beef Slippers. Aleksandr’s hobbies include fencing, courtyard golf and hallway archery.
Sergei
A shy intellectual with a big heart who is head of IT and Tea-Making.
While Sergei is an expert in all things technology (even if he occasionally forgets to plug the computer in) he is not so lucky in love. Sergei is a hopeless romantic hoping to find a lovely lady to spend his golden years with.
Sergei has many responsibilities at Compare the Market including computer-ma-bob Laptopmabob, internet pipings and making cups of tea. Sergei also spends much of his time looking after the meerkat Oleg as well as his boss Mr. Aleksandr (he’s not sure which one is harder). He always makes Oleg’s favourite biscuits and makes sure Aleksandr’s cravats are ironed.
In the few moments Sergei gets to himself he loves to spend time doing crosswords and playing world of meercraft.
Oleg
A lovable meerpup and the cutest intern at Compare the Market.
On a dark and stormy night at the meerkat mansion, Aleksandr and Sergei heard a knock at their door and found Oleg in a basket on their doorstep. The meerkats took him in and he has been part of the family ever since.
Oleg has officially joined the family business at Compare the Market, as the newest intern, his main responsibility is being cute which he excels at. Aleksandr says that Oleg takes after his papa in handsomeness and fashion sense, even dressing in his own burgundy robe and cravat while at work.
Oleg often causing trouble for his Aunty Sergei, from eating all the biscuits in the cupboard to knocking his flatty white all over his computer-ma-bob. Despite this Sergei would still do anything for Oleg encouraging his favourite activities of exploring, catching bugs and drawing.

Our Meerkat advertisements first appeared in 2012 and Aleksandr’s story has continued to evolve over the years.

Compare the Meerkat
Aleksandr first appeared on our screens as the Founder & CEO of Compare the Meerkat, a website dedicated to helping people find the right meerkat. Unfortunately, another website with a similar name Compare the Market appeared causing great confusion and overloading the Compare the Meerkat website. So, Aleksandr launched a campaign to help people learn the difference: For meerkats visit Compare the Meerkat for insurance visit Compare the Market.
Compare the Market’s new owner
When Aleksandr’s campaign to help people learn the difference between Compare the Meerkat and Compare the Market did not solve his problems he decided ‘if you can’t beat them buy them’. And so, Aleksandr became the proud owner of Compare the Market and started work on helping Australians look for a better deal on their household bills.
Moving to Australia
After buying Compare the Market, Aleksandr decided to make the move to Australia with Sergei and Oleg in tow. Leaving the meerkat mansion behind they set up in their new home in the Australian suburbs. Aleksandr and Sergei hit the ground running reaching out to everyday Australians to help them look to compare and save on insurance and energy.
Joining forces with Kochie
Determined to further his mission to help Australians compare, Aleksandr reached out to David “Kochie” Koch to join in his crusade. With a journalistic career spanning four decades including more than 20 years hosting Australia’s top-rated breakfast show, Sunrise, and numerous personal finance books under his belt his was the perfect partner. So together Aleksandr and Kochie joined forces to empower Australians to compare, switch and save wherever savings are available.
