Personality and traits of French Bulldogs

French BulldogFrench Bulldogs, affectionately known as “Frenchies”, are one of Australia’s most popular dog breeds.1 It’s no wonder these purebred dogs with their bat ears, compact build, short snouts, and charming personalities have won the hearts of pet parents nationwide.

French Bulldogs have a general lifespan of 10-12 years, and common colours include brindle, fawn, cream, pied and blue.2 These small dog companions are ideal for urban living and thrive on human interaction. They’ve got a mischievous streak and are affectionate and loyal.

Some key traits include:

  • Temperament: Playful, loving, and great with children. They are known for forming strong bonds with their owners.
  • Energy level: French Bulldogs love cuddles and lazing around, and short bursts of play. They tire easily, especially in warm weather, and may experience breathing difficulties if they’re exercised excessively.
  • Intelligence: Bright and alert, but they can be stubborn. Positive reinforcement training works best, and they can be trained to make good watchdogs.
  • Good with family: Yes, they are excellent companion dogs and tend to get along well with kids and other pets.

French bulldogs are popular dogs, but they have common health problems and aren’t well-suited to heat or strenuous exercise due to their brachycephalic (flat-faced) nature. Most Frenchies prefer air-conditioned comfort and a calm home environment.

Taking care of a French Bulldog

Frenchies are low-maintenance in some ways, but they’re a flat-faced breed and have health concerns that require specific attention. Whether you’re a first-time or experienced bulldog owner, these are French bulldog owners can help your furry friend have the best quality of life:

Understanding French Bulldog health issues

Like English Bulldogs, Frenchies are a brachycephalic breed, making them vulnerable to several health conditions, such as:

  • Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS): Their narrow nostrils and short snouts mean the soft palate is too long, causing windpipe obstruction and difficulty breathing. Surgery may be required in severe cases.
  • Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD): Due to their compact spine, Frenchies are prone to back issues, which can lead to paralysis if left untreated.
  • Skin issues: Although they have short coats, their skin is prone to skin allergies, causing skin fold dermatitis and skin infections, especially if their skin isn’t cleaned regularly.
  • Eye infections: Cherry eye, dry eyes, conjunctivitis, and corneal ulcers are common eye conditions found in French Bulldogs, requiring medication or surgery.
  • Ear infections: The shape of the ear canals in Frenchies is narrower than normal, making it more difficult for debris and moisture to exit the ear canal, which can lead to ear infections.
  • Arthritis: Frenchies are prone to luxating patella (kneecap dislocation) and hip dysplasia (hip joint dislocation), which may lead to arthritis or, in more severe cases, may need surgery.
  • Heatstroke risk: French Bulldogs can overheat very quickly, even in moderately warm weather.

Due to these breed-specific issues, regular vet visits and early detection are crucial to their well-being. Many Frenchies require ongoing care for chronic conditions. Always get your French Bulldog from a reputable breeder and research their breeding practices and the health of their parent pets before making a purchase.

Why is pet insurance important for French Bulldogs?

Veterinary care bills can pile up quickly when you have a breed prone to complex health problems. French Bulldogs may need emergency care, surgeries, long-term medications or even specialist consultations during their lives.

Pet insurance may offer financial protection and peace of mind. Getting your Frenchie a pet insurance plan early, ideally when it is still a French Bulldog puppy, means you’re more likely to get coverage for certain congenital and hereditary conditions before they are considered pre-existing. This is especially important for breeds like French Bulldogs, where symptoms can appear early.

Benefits of pet insurance for French Bulldogs, depending on your policy:

  • Covers surgeries like BOAS correction or IVDD treatment
  • Helps with ongoing management of allergies or joint problems
  • Reduces covered costs for diagnostic tests, medications, and hospital stays
  • Supports early intervention and better long-term outcomes.

How to choose the right pet insurance for your French Bulldog

Not all pet insurance policies are created equal. When shopping around for pet insurance in Australia, it’s vital to choose a plan that covers breed-specific conditions and offers flexibility for chronic care.

Key things to look for:

  • Cover for congenital and hereditary conditions: These are common in French Bulldogs and should be included from the outset.
  • Early enrolment: Insure your pup early to help avoid exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
  • Reimbursement options: Aim for 80–90% reimbursement if you can afford it—it could be worth it with a high-risk breed.
  • Breed-specific exclusions: Check for any clauses that limit coverage for brachycephalic breeds.
  • Optional routine care add-ons: These can cover flea and tick prevention, vaccinations, and dental care.
  • Waiting periods: Understand how long you’ll need to wait before coverage kicks in.

Compare pet insurance companies to look for the best pet insurance plan for your situation, including your financial situation. Each insurance provider has different terms and conditions, so it is essential to read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) before committing to a policy. This ensures you understand what’s included, excluded, and whether the policy suits your pet’s needs.
