Dachshund personality and traits

Dachshund dogDachshunds (Doxies) are affectionately known as ‘wiener dogs’ or ‘sausage dogs’ due to their distinctive long bodies and short legs. Dachshund dogs are a small dog breed that comes in two sizes: standard Dachshunds and miniature Dachshunds.1 Despite their small size, Dachshunds have a big personality. They are brave, often displaying boldness in the face of larger dogs and unfamiliar situations.

There are three coat types: short-haired (smooth coat) dachshund, wire-haired dachshund and long-haired dachshund. They come in many different colours, such as dapple, cream, fawn, brindle, sable, black and tan and other colours.1

With a lifespan of 12 to 16 years old, these affectionate, playful dogs make wonderful family pets.1 They were originally bred as hunting dogs, specifically to hunt badgers, so they possess a natural courage and determination. Daily exercise and mental stimulation are important to keep them fit and happy, though their energy levels can be balanced with moderate walks and playtime. Feeding them balanced, high-quality dog food and supplements and engaging in regular exercise is crucial for preventing obesity and promoting overall health.

When deciding to get a Dachshund puppy, it’s important to research and choose a reputable breeder. A responsible breeder will prioritise the health, temperament and proper breeding standards of their dogs, which can reduce the likelihood of your puppy inheriting common breed-specific health issues.

Dachshund health problems

While Dachshunds are generally healthy, they are predisposed to several common health issues. Understanding the common health conditions of Dachshunds will allow pet owners to proactively care for their dogs, ensuring their well-being throughout their lives.

Some of these health issues can include:

  • Intervertebral Disc Disease(IVDD): IVDD is a condition in which the discs between the vertebrae in the spine degenerate or herniate.2 Due to their long bodies, Dachshunds are particularly prone to back problems.
  • Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV): GDV, also known as bloat, is a life-threatening condition where a dog’s stomach may twist on itself.2 It’s important for pet owners to be able to spot symptoms of GDV, as it requires emergency surgery to avoid fatal complications.
  • Patella luxation: Luxating patella is a condition in which the kneecap dislocates from its normal position.2 It’s common in Dachshunds due to their short legs and long bodies, and may result in pain, lameness and difficulty walking.
  • Obesity: Dachshunds love food, and if not properly managed, they are prone to obesity.2 Excess weight gain can lead to back issues, joint pain and even heart disease and diabetes.
  • Seizures: Dachshunds, like some other breeds, are genetically predisposed to epilepsy.2 Seizures can vary in severity, ranging from mild, brief episodes to more intense, prolonged seizures.
  • Ear infections: Dachshunds have long, floppy ears that can trap moisture and dirt, increasing their risk of ear infections.3
  • Eye problems: Dachshunds can suffer from a range of eye issues, including dry eyes, cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).2 These issues can lead to vision problems and even blindness, making regular eye exams important as part of their healthcare
