What is a service dog?

A service dog, also known as a guide dog or assistance dog, is a type of dog that has been specially trained to perform tasks that assist a person with a disability. These dogs have access rights to public places under Australian law but will require certification or accreditation based on the state or territory in which they reside.1

Service dogs are trained to mitigate specific disabilities and can be used as eyes and ears for the blind and deaf. They can also be trained to detect seizures, obtain medication, provide mobility assistance and more.

Service dogs vs emotional support dogs

Pet insurance for service dogs

Service dogs are crucial in assisting dog owners with disabilities, so ensuring their health and well-being is paramount. While standard pet insurance policies can offer coverage for companion animals, some insurance providers in Australia provide specialised service dog insurance to address the unique needs of service dogs, which may come with higher coverage and discounts for eligible service dogs.

Investing in a pet insurance plan can ensure that your service dog receives timely medical care as well as reimbursement for vet visits and eligible vet bills. This can provide peace of mind and help safeguard their ability to perform essential duties and support you effectively. When selecting insurance for a service dog, you should always consider the following:

  • Level of cover: Ensure you research different covers levels and choose the most suitable policy for your dog, taking into account the hereditary conditions that different dog breeds may have.
  • Benefit limits: Choose your cover’s annual premiums, benefit limits and sub-limits to meet future healthcare needs of your pet.
  • Excess amounts: Choose your out-of-pocket costs per claim and choose an excess that aligns with your financial preferences.

Always read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD) to know your waiting periods, policy inclusions and exclusions, and whether the insurance policy fits you.

NDIS cover

Does health insurance cover service dogs?

In Australia, Medicare and private health insurance policies do not cover the costs of obtaining or maintaining a service dog. Any expenses for training, vet care or equipment must generally be covered personally or via the NDIS if eligible.
