What is a waiting period

In Australia, most health insurance policies will come with waiting periods that you’ll need to serve before you can claim on your private health insurance. For hospital cover, these waiting periods are standardised across the health funds, while extras policy waiting periods will vary between funds.

On a private hospital policy, there is typically a 12-month wait for pregnancy and birth-related services and pre-existing conditions (not including rehabilitation, palliative or in hospital psychiatric care), and a two-month wait for everything else.

If you’ve already served a waiting period with your current health fund and choose to switch funds, you may be able to transfer your served waiting period across to your new fund. This means you may not need to re-serve any waiting periods for the same or a lower level of cover as your old policy.

How to get dental insurance with no waiting periods

On occasion, some health funds will offer to waive waiting periods for some dental services as a promotion to attract new members. This means you’ll be able to claim for some dental benefits right away. You will typically need to make your first payment before receiving any rebates. If you are receiving treatment before your first payment but after the policy start date, be sure to read the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) and the TMD (Target Market Determination) to have a clear understanding of what is covered and whether the health insurance policy suits your needs. Also, hold onto your receipt so you can claim the rebate later.

Typically, health funds will only waive waiting periods for general dental treatments with two or six-month waiting periods that are included under extras. It’s unlikely that you will ever see health funds waiving waiting periods for in-hospital dental care, or more expensive out-of-hospital dental procedures like major dental treatment.

To qualify for a waiting period waiver, you may need to take out a specific type of policy like a combined hospital and extras policy, or a certain level of cover. For your convenience, we’ve compiled some of the offers available through Compare the Market.

There are also some policies in the market that do not have a waiting period for preventative and/or general dental.
