Planning out a trip with long-term travel insurance

If you are looking for your next international destination in 2024, then look no further. Compare the Market analysed its travel insurance data for the past year and found the top 10 most popular international destinations for 2023!

Based on over 1,000,000 travel insurance quotes, Compare the Market reveals that Aussies were obsessed with going to Bali, making it the most popular international destination for 2023.

From its pristine beaches and cheap feeds to an immersive culture and adventure sports galore, Bali offers something to people of all ages and travel group sizes. No wonder it has come out at the top of the list.

Following in second place was the United Kingdom, perfect for people looking to plunge themselves into vibrant cities and nightlife, as well as those who want to traverse the iconic locations spread across the country.

Claiming bronze was the United States of America, again a very versatile destination that can cater to travellers of all ages and group sizes.

According to Compare the Market data*, the top 10 most popular international destinations for 2023 are:

  1. Bali
  2. UK
  3. USA
  4. Italy
  5. France
  6. Thailand
  7. Greece
  8. Japan
  9. New Zealand
  10. Spain

Commenting on the ranking, Compare the Market’s travel expert Catriona Rowntree said it’s no surprise to see Bali take the crown.

“I think it comes to what I like to say as the 3 Cs – cost, close, and climate,” Ms Rowntree said.

“Bali is magnetic because it’s only a relatively short flight away compared to European or American destinations caters for all budgets and has the tropical climate Australians know and love.

“And there’s so much more to Bali than Bintang, bartering and beaches. You can head to Ubud in the uplands for stunning scenery, temples and sacred spaces.

“The UK and USA will always be popular because they have so much to offer. I personally love Hawaii. Honolulu is about a ten-hour flight from Sydney – you can snorkel with turtles, see heritage volcanos, surf Waikiki Beach and shop-till-you-drop.”

Speaking on planning the perfect holiday getaway in 2024, Compare the Market’s Executive General Manager for General Insurance and travel insurance expert, Adrian Taylor, said that it’s all about preparation.

“Whether you’re looking to navigate through New Zealand or backpack through Bangkok, preparation is key to travelling with confidence,” Mr Taylor said. “From creating itineraries, planning transport and accommodation, exchanging relevant money and perhaps even planning your outfits, being prepared allows you some peace of mind on your trip.

“Yet, one thing many people forget to pack early is their travel insurance. Getting travel insurance shouldn’t be done last minute while you’re in a cab going to the airport but should be something people get when they are booking their tickets for their vacation.

“It’s often a misconception that travel insurance only covers you when you are on your holiday, but that’s not true. Travel insurance can cover you from the moment you purchase your policy to the time you arrive safely back home.

“We’ve seen time and time again, when people leave buying travel insurance to the last moment and are not covered for when something happens and they are not able to go on their trip. It’s a shame to waste all that hard-earned money due to an unforeseen circumstance.

“Especially now, where some places around the world can be uncertain, and cancellations and delays can happen at a drop of a hat, it’s best to get travel insurance to make sure you are financially covered if something like this happens to you.”

*Methodology: Top destinations are based on Compare the Market travel insurance quote data from 1/1/23 to 13/8/23. Domestic and continent-based travel insurance enquiries were removed to indicate top international destinations.
