Australia has been named the second-best country in the world for a holiday home destination, according to new research from the home loan experts at Compare the Market.

The Land Down Under outperformed more than 40 countries Compare the Market’s index, which analysed 50 global destinations based on affordability, climate, and lifestyle amenities to determine the most attractive places for holiday home ownership.

  • Australia scored 7.46 out of 10.
  • Cyprus (8.25) finished ahead of Australia in the rankings, while Malta (7.11), Italy (6.91) and Greece (6.76) occupy the lower places in the top five.
  • Australia performed well in various factors, including average monthly rainfall (36.94mm), average temperature (8°C) and the number of places to eat (405 per 100,000 people).

Cyprus, Malta, Italy, and Greece stand out as top holiday home destinations thanks to their sunny climates, vibrant dining scenes, and abundant activities.

Cyprus leads with 534 restaurants per 100,000 people and low rainfall, while Malta impresses with 414 things to do per 100,000 and pleasant weather.

Italy and Greece offer affordable housing and rich culinary experiences, making all four great locations for holiday living.

General Manager of Money at Compare the Market Australia, Stephen Zeller, says there are lots of considerations when looking for your dream spot.

“Buying a holiday home is about more than just finding a beautiful location; it’s about making a smart financial decision.

“Affordability is a key factor, as is weather and lifestyle amenities. Italy, for example, offers accessible housing prices compared to other European nations, which can make financing more manageable.

“That’s where comparing home loan options becomes crucial. Whether you’re purchasing for personal use, rental income, or a mix of both, comparing home loans can give you a clearer picture of your borrowing power and help you make informed decisions.”
