New research has placed Australia among the most natural disaster anxious countries. That’s according to a study by the home and contents insurance experts at Compare the Market Australia, which has ranked 17 countries based on their monthly search volume for 2025.

The study revealed that Australia had the highest cyclone-anxiety related search volume within the study, indicating the impact that Severe Tropical Cyclone Alfred had on the Australian population. This level of anxiety was then followed by the USA and New Zealand.

Australia also placed as the second-most anxious country for both earthquakes and floods.

Moving South-East of the nation, New Zealand was placed as the most earthquake-anxious nation within the study. New Zealand citizens also showed a high level of interest in fire insurance.

The USA and Canada placed as the second and third most anxious nations with the study for tsunamis, respectively, with the USA also landing as the most anxious nation for floods.

Fire insurance came in as the most searched term of the study, with almost every country within the study showing a high level of interest in the topic.

Executive General Manager of General Insurance, Adrian Taylor, notes the importance of understanding what you’re covered for in the event of an emergency.

“Natural disasters are terrible and, unfortunately for some areas, can be unavoidable,” Mr Taylor said.

“If you’re in an area where you’re worried about a certain natural disaster, it’s important to ensure that your home and belongings are appropriately covered, should the worst happen.

“Some events, such as flood damage, may be covered as an optional extra or as a separate policy that can be purchased alongside building and contents insurance.

“When looking to take out home and contents insurance, it’s always good to compare your options and look for a great policy for you, your home and your lifestyle.”

Make sure to read through the details to see which natural disasters are covered. This includes the Target Market Determination (TMD) and Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
