A new report by Compare the Market ranks Australian cities as among the best in the world to raise a family.
Brisbane topped the list of 50 cities from across the world. The city had the highest number of green spaces per capita, with 84.89 parks and playgrounds per 100,000 people. Brisbane also had the second-highest safety score, and Australian cities ranked sixth-highest in happiness score among the countries represented in the index.
Sydney made the top five, ranking fifth. While Sydney had twice the number of activities and things to do with kids than Brisbane, Sydney had a higher cost of living. The average cost of living in Sydney for a family of four is estimated at AUD$6,176.23, compared to Brisbane’s $4,827.06 a month.
Other major Australian cities like Perth ranked sixth, while Melbourne was ranked seventh.
In comparison to the other cities on the list, Australian cities are very safe, and the nation has high world happiness scores, child vaccination rates, and the highest statutory parental leave in the world from any country listed on the index.
Australian cities are also much more affordable than other good cities to raise a family, which helped give them an edge in the calculations.
Stephen Zeller, General Manager of Money at Compare the Market, notes that no matter where you look to raise your family, when you’re ready to settle down and get a home loan, comparing options is crucial.
A mortgage is for a long time, enough time to start a family and raise your child into adulthood. If you’re looking at buying a home in a city that you think will be a good spot to raise a family, the biggest piece of advice is comparing your options before applying for a mortgage,” Mr Zeller says.
“A mortgage with a smaller interest rate could save you thousands of dollars in interest over the course of your loan. It’s a key thing to look for when getting ready to take out a mortgage.
“Other things to look for are account fees, redraw facilities, offset accounts and other features that could save money or give flexibility to borrowers. Compare the Market’s team of brokers are on hand to guide borrowers through every step of the process.”
