Cat and dog breeds most expensive to insure

Australians are over the moon for “Luna” – the name has topped the charts for cats and dogs in 2025, for the third year running according to new data from Compare the Market.

The pet insurance experts trawled tens of thousands of quotes to confirm Luna remains Australia’s favourite pet moniker.

Dog owners are loco for Coco, crazy for Charlie, mad about Milo and fanatical about Frankie, with these names rounding out the top five.

Some trends were breed specific – with Winnie winning the hearts of Cocker Spaniel owners. Surprisingly, while “Blue” and “Bluey” were popular picks for Blue Healers.

Meanwhile cat owners were purring over Simba and Loki – names from popular Disney and Marvel franchises.

According to Compare the Market’s latest pet survey*, owners spend an average $1400 feeding, grooming, and medicating their pets each year.

But with emergency vet bills climbing to hundreds – possibly thousands of dollars – Compare the Market’s Chris Ford said pet insurance was an important addition to your pet’s budget.

“As these dignified names show, Australians see pets as part of the family and we’re willing to spend big bucks giving them a good life,” Mr Ford said.

“Pet insurance is a great way to protect your furry best friend and your bank account, and with policies for young animals starting from just a few dollars a week, it won’t eat a hole in your wallet.”
