Electric vehicle drivers could potentially save up to $1,800 a year by taking advantage of an EV energy plan offer according to a new analysis by Compare the Market.

With EV sales up 157% year-on-year in April, thousands of people could potentially benefit from new electricity offers for EV owners.

Consumers on market-leading deals could save anywhere between $180 to $1,800 annually assuming a household consumes 15kWh and charges 20kWh daily.

Are EV plans really worth it?

Most EV plans offer ultra-low electricity tariffs, usually below 10 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) between certain times, while some plans have free energy periods to incentivise charging when there is less demand on the grid.

However, compared to regular energy plans, some EV plans charged up to 24 cents per day more for the supply charge, up to 5c/kWh more for single rates, and up to 12c/kWh more for peak time-of-use plans – underscoring the importance of reading the fine print.

Only three retailers offered identical rates for their regular and EV plans.

Compare the Market’s Economic Director, David Koch, said it was worth switching to an EV plan but it’s still important to shop around for a competitive deal.

“The fuel crisis has sparked strong interest in plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles, which is a great opportunity to switch to an EV energy plan,” Mr Koch said.

“However, not all offers are identical. The energy comparison experts at Compare the Market have uncovered some retailers are charging higher rates on EV plans than their standard offerings, which diminishes the potential savings you could benefit from.

“It generally works out to be cheaper on an EV plan, but there’s a wide difference in how much you could save between retailers. If you aren’t driving as far and don’t need to charge as much every day, those potential savings will vary as well.

“A bonus perk is the ultra-low tariff or free energy periods don’t just apply to EV charging for most retailers, so you can schedule the dishwasher, washing machine, and other devices to maximise the savings.

“It’s well worth shopping around and looking at the details beyond the advertised EV promotion to make sure you’re making the most out of your wallet.

“With regulators reducing their standing offers from July 1, it’s a good time to shop around EV energy plans regardless of whether you’re a new or existing EV owner.”

Disclaimers

*Compare the Market analysed standard and electric vehicle charging plans offered by nine retailers. Figures are accurate as at 12 May 2026, but subject to change.

An example property in Brisbane was used for quoting, with an alternate address used if a plan was unavailable in Queensland.

A higher-powered wall box charging station is need in order to charge 20kWh within the EV plan ultra-low tariff or free energy periods.

We assumed the household consumes 15kWh per day throughout the year (including 7kWh peak, 5kWh shoulder, and 3kWh off-peak used if on a time-of-use tariff), with an additional 20kWh from EV charging per day.

Based on this assumed daily energy consumption profile, each usage rate from standard and EV plans were calculated, plus the daily supply charge, then multiplied to give an annual cost.
