It’s not only international trips that may need travel insurance. Our Executive General Manager, Adrian Taylor, has some tips on how to search for the right policy when travelling domestically.
No two trips are the same, so it’s important that your travel insurance takes your Norfolk Island itinerary into account. It might be you want more cover for your valuables or are keen to go diving. In cases like this, optional extras may be useful.
One way to save on your travel insurance premium is to increase the excess amount. Your excess is how much you contribute towards a claim, so it’s important to choose an amount that’s manageable and you’re able to pay. It also works in reverse, so if you want a less expensive excess, you’ll need to pay more for your premium.
No one likes paying more than they need to. That’s why it’s important to compare travel insurance policies through Compare the Market. By getting multiple travel insurance quotes, you can search for a policy that is right for you and your budget.
Norfolk Island is a small island that sits in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of mainland Australia between New Caledonia and New Zealand. If you’re flying from Brisbane, it can take as little as two hours to reach this tropical paradise, or two and a half hours from Sydney.1
It’s always a good idea to consider travel insurance for every trip you take. Since you’ll be visiting Norfolk Island either by plane or by cruise, having cancellation and delay cover in the event of flight cancellations or bad weather can help keep your trip on track.
But your domestic travel insurance won’t include medical cover, as you’ll still be covered by Medicare or your private health insurance on Norfolk Island.
It’s important to check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for your policy to check exactly what you’re covered for. Check the Target Market Determination (TMD) to see whether a policy is right for you.
If you’re an Australian citizen there aren’t any passport or visa requirements to go to Norfolk Island. This is because, while it’s not connected to the mainland, it’s still considered a part of Australia. However, you will still need to bring photographic identification such as your Australian Driver’s License, Proof of Age card or Norfolk Island document of identity to visit.
If you take out domestic cover for your trip to Norfolk Island, the benefits included in your policy may vary depending on the insurer and if you’re taking out any optional extras, so be sure to check your PDS for the full list of inclusions.
Some common inclusions may be 24/7 emergency assistance cover, personal liability cover and more:
If an event covered by your policy stops you from being able to attend pre-booked accommodation, tours and more, your policy may cover you for these types of trip cancellations and reimburse you for some of the costs of lost deposits or cancellation fees.
If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, you won’t be covered for medical expenses, but you may be covered for cancellation expenses relating to your conditions. If you’ve declared your medical conditions and your insurer has offered to cover them, you may be covered for cancellation costs if your condition causes you to have to cancel before, or partway through, your trip.
Travel delay cover can help cover some of the costs involved when your trip gets put on pause. For example, if bad weather conditions delay your return flight home and you need to pay additional expenses for extra accommodation, food or other essential items, you may be covered.
Luggage cover offers protection for your belongings in case they become damaged, lost or stolen while on holiday. This includes your travel documents, credit cards and even cash. It’s a good idea to have photos or receipts to support your claim.
While medical treatment isn’t covered under a domestic policy, you may still receive cover for accidental death or permanent disability if this occurs while you’re on holiday. You, or your estate, may receive a benefit amount to cover some of the expenses incurred in such an accident.
When you hire a rental car, you may need to pay the rental company an excess payment if the car is damaged or stolen. However, if your insurer offers it, you may be able purchase rental car excess cover as an optional extra to cover this cost, although some insurers may include it automatically.
Not all domestic policies will cover cruises either automatically, or even offer cruise cover as an optional extra. In most cases, if you plan to take a cruise to Norfolk Island, you may need to purchase an international travel insurance policy that covers cruises in ordered to be covered. This is because medical treatment by onboard doctors may not be covered by Medicare or your private health insurance. Neither will medical evacuation from your ship if you need to return to the mainland for treatment.
With every policy comes a number of exclusions that may impact whether your claim is accepted by your travel provider. Common exclusions may include:
For the full list of exclusions, limits, terms and conditions you should check the PDS of your policy.
