Our Executive General Manager of General Insurance, Adrian Taylor, has some tips for Australians looking to travel to Cambodia:
Each trip is different. Some people like to relax, while others seek adventure. Whatever your trip entails, check the inclusions on your policy suit your needs throughout your journey. You may only require standard inclusions such as luggage, medical and cancellation cover, or need more specific insurance options like adventure travel cover.
When applying for travel insurance, it’s best to be upfront about any pre-existing medical conditions. Not all insurers provide cover for pre-existing medical conditions, however some insurers will assess your declared pre-existing medical conditions to determine if they can provide additional cover. If yes, they’ll also determine whether any additional premium is required. Not revealing your condition could leave you uninsured should your condition lead to travel delays or the need for medical treatment.
Are you planning a few trips this year? You may like to consider multi-trip insurance over purchasing a single-trip policy for each separate holiday. Depending on the policy and your travel plans, annual cover may provide you with better value, but make sure you check the limit on days you can travel under an annual policy.
No matter where you travel in the world, having travel insurance provides peace of mind. Cambodia is a great tourist destination and home to some incredible sites and experiences unique to Southeast Asia, from the breathtaking Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap to the beautiful beaches and national parks in Sihanoukville. However, things can go wrong no matter where you are, and travel insurance is a way of preparing for these events. Some travel insurance inclusions to consider for your next trip include cover for:
The cover you receive from a policy will vary depending on the insurance company, it’s wise to check the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for the exact details of what your policy covers and, just as importantly, what it doesn’t. When considering travel insurance plans for your trip to Cambodia, here are some inclusions worth having.
Cancellation cover is worth having, no matter where you’re going. If you need to cancel your trip due to unforeseen circumstances, cancellation cover can help reimburse pre-paid and non-refundable expenses, including accommodation, travel, activities and more.
Some circumstances that could lead to you needing trip cancellation include::
Once you’ve bought travel insurance, your cancellation cover begins. Claiming for an event that occurs before you’ve bought travel insurance won’t be covered, even if you’ve already booked the trip.
Getting ill or injured in a foreign country can be an overwhelming experience, especially when you have to pay for it as medical costs in some countries are expensive. Australia has no Reciprocal Health Care Agreement (RHCA) with Cambodia, and you won’t have access to Medicare or your usual health or medical insurance.1 Travel insurance with medical cover can include:
Cambodian healthcare facilities are generally considered poor quality, especially compared to what’s available in Australia. Once you leave Phnom Penh, there are very few facilities equipped to deal with a medical emergency. Having medical cover as part of your travel insurance helps prepare for unexpected medical costs, including medical evacuation, should it be needed.
Many Australians are travelling to Asia for medical tourism. However, elective and cosmetic surgery in Cambodia is unregulated and won’t be covered by your insurer.1 To be covered for medical expenses overseas for elective or cosmetic surgery, you’ll need cover from an insurer that specialises in insurance for medical cover.
Losing your belongings is stressful. Your travel insurance may be able to reimburse you for your loss up to a limit set by the insurer. You could be covered for the following items:
There are conditions where your claim may be unsuccessful, such as if your luggage was left unattended in a public area. Unfortunately, there are a lot of petty crimes and scams in busy areas of Cambodia.1 Travel insurance is one of the precautions you can take to protect yourself against theft.
Even the most comprehensive travel insurance won’t cover you for everything. Before purchasing your policy, it’s important to understand your cover’s inclusions and exclusions. Though each insurer will have different things they will and won’t cover, here are some of the most common exclusions in travel insurance:
Yes, to enter Cambodia, you’ll need to obtain a travel visa.1 You can do this by applying for an e-visa online or getting a tourist visa on arrival. This visa will be valid for 30 days, so if you plan to stay longer, you’ll need to apply for a visa through a Cambodian embassy or consulate.
Cambodia now requires you to obtain an e-arrival card sometime in the seven days before your arrival.1 You can do this online, and it is free.
As the Executive General Manager of General Insurance, Adrian Taylor believes in educating customers about the importance of travel insurance so that anyone can kick back and make the most of their time away from home. While no one wants a disrupted holiday, a suitable travel insurance policy can provide a financial safety net for yourself, your belongings and your trip in case things go wrong.
