Consider cover for your portable items

You can insure items you take out of the home for an additional premium. Portable contents cover can provide coverage for things such as jewellery, sports equipment, clothing items, laptops and more. This cover is generally offered as an optional extra and is worth considering if you take valuables like these with you when you leave the house.

Avoid underinsurance

Do a thorough assessment of your possessions to get an accurate idea of what your policy limit should be. It’ll take a bit of time, but it can help you avoid being underinsured (where your coverage doesn’t adequately meet the replacement value of your contents).

Compare your contents insurance regularly

If you find a better policy, you can switch at any time – you don’t need to wait for your renewal notice. If you paid your insurance premium annually, your insurer will typically give you a pro-rata refund for the remaining period of your cover. Just keep in mind that cancellation fees may apply.
