Consider your waiting periods

When you upgrade your cover or take out a health insurance policy for the first time, you’ll typically need to serve a waiting period before you can make a claim. If you have planned any medical treatment soon, make sure you take out cover with enough time to serve your waiting periods first.

Check your rebate eligibility

While you’re looking for a health insurance policy, keep in mind that your Medicare status, income and age will determine your eligibility for the private health insurance rebate. This rebate will reduce the cost of health insurance for eligible members.

Choose your excess

When you claim on your private hospital insurance, you’ll typically need to pay an excess and/or co-payment. Many funds will let you choose this excess amount from a range of options when you sign up for a policy. The higher the excess you choose, the lower your premiums will be and vice versa.
